Security of Identity...

Dear Blog Land,

Happy 2018!  Yes, of course I am fully aware that 2018 started 21 days ago and that I am horribly late with my greeting!  And that it's been a ridiculous amount of time since I last posted (a full post).  And also that there really are no excuses.  Except, well, life happened.  And as life happens, sometimes we actually have to sit back and just let.it.happen.  I will apologize in advance for the LONG POST today; but, well, you know!

I have missed centering myself and pouring out to you.  But, I had to truly take some time to be poured into.  2017 was a lot of things.  Like every other year, there were valleys (some lower than I have ever been before), but also there were tremendous highs (some that I never thought possible).  2017 was also a year of serious change in almost every area of my life!

There's so much I want to say, I already know I will have to break this into several posts to get to it all.  And being me, I simply must do it in an orderly and methodical manner (what less would you expect from an OCD person?); if you missed my previous post about being OCD, you can read it here.

So my word of the year for 2017 was "focus."  That was the word I chose to direct the year (which I apparently did NOT share with you, so here's a brief synopsis).  Let's start with the definition of the word, found here:

Definition of focus

plural foci play \ˈfō-ˌsī also -ˌkī\ also focuses
1 a : a center of activity, attraction, or attention
   b : a point of concentration
2 : directed attention : emphasis

3 a : direction 6c

b : a state or condition permitting clear perception or understanding

Next, my reasons for choosing the word.  2016 was actually "alright" for the most part.  The last quarter of the year was not.  I found myself grappling with a tremendous loss of self and still dealing with the ever-present financial woes of the day.  And I felt that I need to simply focus more: inward and outward.  There's more, but you get the gist.  If you missed my January 2016 post about why I choose a word of the year and the background on it, you can read it here.

The things that I did not stop doing in 2017 were 1) going to church weekly (I probably missed less than 5 Sundays the whole year), in case you forgot, that's Victory Apostolic Church in Matteson, IL; 2) continuing with my second year of Discipleship University (also at VAC); and 3) engaging in outreach activities.  All of which were things that kept me rooted and focused no matter what was going on. And trust me, there was PLENTY going on in 2017!  I'm going to do a four-part post about 2017 (I promise, I'm really going to do it), but not today.

What I want to focus on today (see, there's that word again), is just about being secure.  Not
speaking in terms of financial security (although that's usually the first thing that people think of and certainly it is important).  But I mean being spiritually secure.  Because it's our souls that really matter, right?

On Saturday I received a spiritual "whooping" from my good friend Val in response to my emotional meltdown (yes, there's no other word for it but meltdown).  There is a thing (among things) that I am dealing with right now and it is exerting a lot of pressure on my life at the moment.  As I expressed to her, I felt "terrified" by it.  And she got me right real quick with a good old reminder to stop focusing on that thing, but instead focus on the Father who has control of all things (yes, even my thing)!  I paraphrased because I was not taking notes in the midst of my meltdown... I had a good cry, which was cathartic, and then I set about the business of letting go of the clutter that had invaded both my mind and my house.  I told that Google home thing (a gift from the boy, you'll hear about Christmas later) to start playing me some good old gospel music and got to work!  But if you're curious now, you can check it out here.

When I got to church on Sunday, the sermon was the last in a series on Soul, Mind and Body.  Without getting too deep (and I don't have my notes anyway), Pastor Singleton spoke about getting control of our bodies (or flesh).  Which for me looks like pushing myself to do things when I otherwise cave into the feeling of being too tired or controlling flesh in all its forms (especially the words that come out of my mouth)!  Ouch.  Which directly pertained to the clutter that I had allowed to accumulate and made excuses for (usually being too tired). I'm about 85% done with the projects I started on Saturday (yes, I made a list), and it already feels good (and looks better too)!

But let's get back to that fear thing, or as I labeled it, "terrified."  During that chat on Saturday, I had to face some ugly truths.  Mostly about who I depended on and trusting that God's got me, no matter what.  Which I really do know better, but this flesh!  If you recall, I deal a whole lot with trust on this blog.  And I almost always keep coming back to it because I am a firm believer that trusting in God (exercising faith, whatever you want to call it) is how we are going to make it in this world and have a relatively stress-free existence.  Now, that doesn't mean that we will never have concerns and that everything will be a bed of roses all the time.  Far from the truth!  Beginning to trust God more will likely open up the most horrific can of worms that you could ever imagine!  But at the end of the day, the question is whether you are going to try and operate out of yourself or will you trust that God has it?

Being honest (and what would this blog be without my honesty?), being an INTJ person (if you are not familiar with Meyers Briggs personality labels, you can get a quick primer here), I base my actions and make judgments based on logic and objective data, so I struggle in this area.  A lot. Also, I think that I put a lot of pressure to be the best at EVERYTHING on myself that is sometimes just unnecessary (raise your hand if you know it's impossible anyway!!!) and I believed I am being judged for being less than.  By people and even God.  But as the sermon yesterday reminded me, as a believer, our shortcomings have been covered by Christ's blood so that we appear blemish-free before God.  And honestly?  It's ok.

I hope that this post will be encouraging for someone; I find that when I get too far off and into my own head and path that I get reminders (sometimes not so gentle) to turn my focus, not inward or outward but UPWARDS.  I just want to leave you (for now), with two things.  One is a scripture that should most decidedly be in your war room arsenal:

Romans 8:38-39New International Version (NIV)
38 For I am convinced that neither death nor life, neither angels nor demons,[a] neither the present nor the future, nor any powers, 39 neither height nor depth, nor anything else in all creation, will be able to separate us from the love of God that is in Christ Jesus our Lord.

And two, this lovely image of my calendar for today (January 22nd) - it is a perpetual calendar that was gifted to me last year on a particularly hard day by C-Rob (you can purchase one here):

So wrapping up today - remember that God loves you in spite of you and your identity in him is secure!  Even if you let worry and circumstances cover you in mental and physical clutter (like me).  I love you and there's nothing you can do about it!  Thank you for your readership and patience!  Did this make some sense and bless you today?  Holla at your girl and let me know (or just say hi).

Have a wonderful day, Blogland!!! xoxoxo

Be Intentional...

TGIF, Framily!!!!  Thank God I made it to Friday and accomplished my goal of posting every day this week!  So I want to end the week talking about being intentionally focused.  (I know wrote about focus a few weeks ago; you can refresh your memory here, but I want to talk about it from another perspective).

There is a song out now called "Intentional" by Travis Greene.  It is a song that plays over and over in my head throughout the day.  It speaks of God being intentional about things that are happening in your life and that there's no need to worry.  Have a listen:

Nice song, right? But guess what?  As much as God is intentional about His plans for us, He expects us to be intentional as well in the things we are to do.  Especially when we beg and pray for him to enlarge our territory like the Prayer of Jabez... To illustrate this point, I turn to the March 20th sermon of Bishop TD Jakes - "Coming into Focus" (text from Luke 9:49-55). This one is for those of you who, like me, have big dreams!  (*below is the summary of my notes taken as I listened to the sermon, outline style*)

  • Can’t have a new blessing with an old order,  you have to refocus or you will have chaos
  • Restructure, reorganize and order is the answer to anxiety
  • It doesn’t mean that you can’t do it or can’t have it, just not with the old order
    • Are you organized for what you prayed for?
  • Need to refocus for where you’re going, not for where you’ve been
  • Chaos= out of order for the weight load you are carrying
  • Had to follow someone without focus
    • Money without focus will have you in poverty!
  • Sometimes you have to leave good things behind because they don’t fit where you are going
  • Focus= discipline
  • Almost as bad as no focus is wrong focus
    • Wrong focus is committing to the wrong thing; right efforts in the wrong matters
  • Anytime something moves, you have to refocus
  • Focus is important
  • What is your center/priority?
    • Focus on the center then deal with the parameters
    • What have you set your face on?
  • You have the power to bring your life back into focus
  • Where God is taking you, you have to get your life into focus
    • If it hasn’t happened by now
    • If you’re going to win any kind of fight, need to focus
    • In this season, I need to focus (not enough time or money to do everything)
  • In the text, Jesus seemed aloof because he wouldn’t go to Samaria (and get out of focus)
    • The disciples came and told him that someone was casting out demons in His name and he was not one of the disciples and Jesus was unconcerned.
    • See also Philippians 1:19: Paul said as long as they are preaching Christ, I rejoice whether sincere or not
  • Is your lens too wide?
    • If your lens is too wide, you are out of focus
  • Focus is too important to be compromised
  • Do you not know how strong you are when you are focused???
  • Gotta get (my) YOUR focus!
    • Have to choose what you let hurt you and what keeps you up at night
    • No one is strong when doing too many things at one time
    • The greatest resistance comes near the greatest opportunity; fight with greatest focus
    • Don’t let ego drive you out of focus
  • You are like FIRE when you are focused!
    • If you can focus with a little, you can be blessed with more
    • Show God you’re an investment
    • That’s what tithing is all about
    • When focus on God first, all other things can be given to you
  • Can be focused in one area and out of focus in another
    • Sometimes the whole front end of your life can be jacked up but God will break the order and save the best for last
  • People are drawn to your season of miracles, but will they love you out of season?
    • Move from season of miracles to season of message
  • The real test of commitment is to go through the seasons
  • Every stage requires a bit more from you (also stages of Christian walk)
    • Miracle Stage – Message Stage- Movement Stage (consecration enough to have moments with God) – Mission Stage (after movement stage, Jesus set his face to go to Jerusalem)
    • The real test is your commitment to loving God when you don’t like what He’s done
    • Can you love me when you don’t like me?
  • In order to be on a mission, you have to set your face
    • Requires discipline
    • Where is your mission?
    • It will take you to the cross, sacrifice, self-denial, something is more important than you
    • Whatever that is, it is your mission
  • To be focused is intentional & have priorities
  • God is intentional, no matter what it looks like
  • Time to get in focus and stop worrying about parameters and distractions
  • One way we show focus is through tithing (give what’s right, not what’s left)
  • What will you do with more focus?

I've said it before and I'll say it again:  Bishop Jakes is an awesome teacher!  Now, his style isn't for everyone, but for me, who is a student at heart, I love learning new things, especially a new life application to scripture.  But I urge you to give it a shot; here is the sermon in its entirety:

What am I saying with all this talk about being intentional?  Let me show you!

A little more than a year ago, a friend of mine who was gearing up to study for the CPA Exam (4 parts) asked for prayers from her friend circle.  We began praying for her, over the course of the year, some of the exams had a positive result and others not so much.  Her family experienced some health challenges with one of her children, resulting in a huge and devastating setback on this quest.  She took some time to regroup and focus and meanwhile, I began to pray even harder and with even more specificity.  Intentional and focused prayer, while she engaged in intentional and focused study.  Today (May 5th), I got the call that I had been waiting for:  all parts of the exam were complete and passed!  Amen!!! I am STILL high off that happy news today about my answered prayers!  You know why?  Because as long as my friends are getting blessed and my prayers on their behalf are being answered, it means that God is still in the blessing business and mine is coming too!

In my own world, I am in the midst of embarking on some new ventures, which I will share details about later.  But I do ask for your prayers that God directs my path as I intentionally train my focus on them.  This sermon has been the kick I need stay focused and intentional about the things I need to do to make some of these dreams of mine a reality.  I'm so excited about it all, I could burst!  But I must stay focused... I have big dreams, y'all!  And so should you.

I can't remember exactly where I've heard this before, but it's something to the effect of: God may plant the seed and direct your path, but you still have to do your part.  As my old pastor, Pastor James Brooks, preached back in 2010 when I first visited his church, He is the Alpha and the Omega, the beginning and the end.  Meaning that He is before you and behind you as you walk the various paths of your life and destiny.  He is the author and finisher of your fate.  But you have to walk the road.  In the words of Ted and Sheri, "He starts it, and He finishes it, but you've got to work the middle."  I was trying to find a link to the whole song, but I'm only able to get a snippet (sorry!) here, track 10.  I hope you can get the message though - you have to do your part.  God gives you the dream but you have to do your part to make it a reality.  Well how do I do that?  By being intentionally focused...  Remember, "I can do ALL things through Christ, which strengthens me" - Philippians 4:13.

So who is going to be intentionally focused with me in this season?  Holla @ Darvi and let me know that you're standing with me (put me on your prayer list and when I share my testimony you can add it to your answered prayer list!).  Be blessed and have a wonderful weekend!  xoxoxo

Focus...

Sooo, its been a long time.  Since Good Friday,  actually.  Believe it or not, there's half an Easter post written that was never finished (and it will be, so when it posts, just roll with it; the message will still be good,  I promise! By the way, when this is published, it will be my 26th sorority anniversary, so feel free to send me some love)!

So what have I been up to? Well, to be perfectly honest and transparent as ever, I haven't been totally ok.  Physically,  I've been fine and my days have progressed without any real incident. But, I've been under a huge amount of stress, work, dealing with disappointment buckling under the weight of ideas and things I want to do, class, ministry, meetings, decluttering, kids - in other words, life.  Because yes, Life Happens!  In the midst of it all, I decided to take some "mental health breaks" and just slow down a bit.  Part of that slowing down was to step away from the computer (I really don't like typing long things on my phone...) and I have been reading, crafting, sleeping, reconnecting with old friends, I went to the movies alone (to a late show on a weekday- won't do THAT again!), picked back up my outdoor walking since the weather has been decent, sent some handwritten notes on good stationery to people, went to see a couple of exhibits at the Cultural Center, registered for some 5k races, and just gave myself permission to "veg out" just a little bit.  And you know what?  I needed it.  Seriously.  There is no price that can be put on taking a little time out for some self-care.  It is something that most women don't do enough of, because we are being pulled in so many different directions by all of the different hats that we wear in a single day... But it is very necessary!  So I challenge each of you to just say no sometimes and read a book you enjoy, not just for a class; take a walk outside at your local park or just even in your neighborhood; watch television (still working on finding some time for that one) - just do something for yourself!  Everyone needs time to recharge their batteries.  So take it.

I even bought this cute little t-shirt from Old Navy after a fellow online crafter sounded the alarm in our Facebook group:

Isn't it adorbs????  And it ties in with our topic of today, since you can't take a good picture unless you:  FOCUS!

Now the flip side of that is that other things just don't happen.  Like my laundry.  And man, do I ever need to do laundry!  But it's not fun and the thought of having to do it actually raises my blood pressure, so I'll probably just go buy some more underwear and keep it moving until I'm in a better frame of mind about it (don't laugh, it's what I used to do in college because I hate doing laundry just that much!).

But seriously, I have been trying to rid my mind of clutter so I can get focused.  I've been feeling a tug to do some things, a strong tug, and then I've also felt very strong resistance to stop me from doing those things at the same time.  Spiritual warfare y'all!  Oh that reminds me, if you want to get a real feel for how spiritual warfare plays out in the natural, I have an excellent novel for you to read.  I first read it about 12 years ago and it was brought back to my remembrance so I repurchased it and reread it again last month.  It is suspenseful and full of mystery and adventure, but mostly it is full of spiritual warfare and illustrates the powerful effect that prayer has on the angels dispatched on our behalf.  It also provides a very real look at the different demons who are also dispatched to try and thwart the plans for our lives.  In short, it was an awesome, awesome book!  The title is, "Piercing the Darkness," and the author is Frank Peretti.  It is actually the second book in a series (I didn't read the first one), but you don't have to read the first one to enjoy this one.  It will make you laugh, cry, pray and praise!!!  Here's what the cover looks like:

Back to what I was saying - I can actually feel the spiritual warfare going on around me at this time, in this season.  I don't know what the Master Plan is of course, but there is apparently something I'm supposed to do and I'm just trying to be and stay obedient, even when I don't understand it all.  At the same time, just as strongly I can feel the negative pull and energy trying to distract and keep me unfocused so that I can't do anything.  The devil IS a liar!  If you knew how many times I tried to get up and to the computer to work on something (this blog included) and just ended up falling asleep or even crying (when I was perfectly fine the rest of the day), go figure.  So in the midst of all that, I have been in fervent prayer to keep my mind clear and focused on the various tasks I need to do.  Sidenote, I found this little blog post on being focused, you can check it out here.  Back to what I was saying:  I need your prayers... I am on the edge of something, I can feel it!  I need your prayers that I stay focused on each and every task that is placed before me, no matter how big or how small.  I just ran across this quote on Pinterest, maybe it will help someone else too:

"When you're hitting a wall, focus on one brick." Tyler May

And for our edification this week, here are some scriptures to help us in this focusing process (all ESV translation):

Proverbs 4:25 - Let your eyes look directly forward, and your gaze be straight before you.

Matthew 6:33 - But seek ye first the kingdom of God and his righteousness, and all these things will be added to you.

Proverbs 16:3 - Commit your work to the Lord, and your plans will be established.

Ecclesiastes 9:10 - Whatever your hand finds to do, do it with your might, for there is no work or thought or knowledge or wisdom in Sheol, to which you are going.

Isaiah 41:10 - Fear not, for I am with you; be not dismayed, for I am your God; I will strengthen you, I will help you, I will uphold you with my righteous right hand.

Hebrews 10:23 - Let us hold fast the confession of our hope without wavering, for he who promised is faithful.

Romans 1:12 - That is, that we may be mutually encouraged by each other's faith, both yours and mine.

Philippians 4:13 - I can do all things through him who strengthens me.

As I was searching for scriptures to include, one of my friends was laid on my heart and I will speak her name here:  Val. Val, stay focused and don't waver, God's got this!!!

And well, since I don't need an excuse for a good song, here goes one, "He's a Keepa," by Rodney Bryant (I finally figured out how to do this - I RHOCK!!!):

Stay encouraged everyone and send me some words of encouragement that I may stay focused!  Holla @ Darvi and let me know you're out there!!! Be Blessed, Framily!!!  xoxoxo
